AKO Foundation Story
2014 Founded in Ghana

From a Bold Idea to a Growing Movement

AKO Foundation was founded in 2014 with a simple but powerful belief: that young people in Ghana and across Africa are not just the future — they are the solution, right now.

What began as a small group of passionate youth activists in Accra has grown into a nationally recognised environmental advocacy organisation, with a presence at the highest levels of international environmental governance.

Today, AKO Foundation works at the intersection of environmental justice, youth empowerment, and climate resilience — from grassroots community campaigns to the halls of the United Nations.

Represented Ghana at UNEA, BRS COPs & GEF Assembly
Recognised by IPEN as a leading African youth voice
Delivered 200+ environmental workshops nationwide
Winner of multiple national SDG recognition awards
Our Mission

To empower communities and young people to create sustainable solutions for healthier ecosystems and stronger livelihoods.

We do this through education, advocacy, community action, and policy engagement — placing youth at the centre of every solution.

Our Vision

A generation of bold African leaders solving environmental challenges through knowledge, innovation, and action.

We envision an Africa where thriving ecosystems and prosperous communities grow together — shaped by empowered, informed youth.

Our Core Values

These six principles guide every decision, programme, and partnership at AKO Foundation.

Environmental Justice

We believe every community — regardless of income or location — deserves a clean, safe, and healthy environment. We fight for equitable access to environmental rights.

Youth Empowerment

Young people are not just beneficiaries — they are leaders and change-makers. We equip youth with the knowledge, skills, and platforms to lead environmental solutions.

Innovation

We embrace creative, evidence-based approaches to environmental challenges — from technology-driven agribusiness to community-led waste management systems.

Integrity

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct in all our work, partnerships, and use of resources.

Collaboration

No one organisation can solve the climate crisis alone. We build strong, inclusive partnerships with communities, governments, NGOs, and international bodies.

Community First

Every programme we design starts and ends with the communities we serve. Local knowledge, local ownership, and local impact are central to our approach.
