For various reasons I would like to apply as a volunteer in Africa. Since I was a teenager I wanted to work for underprivileged people in the world. I want to see the problems in the world not only through the media, but with my own eyes. I have only seen the problems from a point far away and only if the media is interested in the topic. I would like to go to a place, no one really cares about and support people who want to help themselves.
I decided against a voluntary service in Germany, because I want to see the world and not only the country where I have lived my whole live. I have heard and read a lot about the problems in African countries und would like to gain experiences on this continent. I think that it is a privilege to live in a country like Germany. I would like to help people who have been less advantaged than I am.. I am very interested in human rights and the way they are carried out. Because of this I am interested of the rights of women, too. I think that as a woman, it is easier to help women who have been treated unfairly. But, of course, I am aware that as a female I will have to be cautious and careful in many situations.
I would like to learn more about different cultures. African cultures are obviously very different from German culture and I would like to learn about the people and how they cope with their problems.
I know that the gap between rich and poor is very big, particularly in South Africa. Undoubtedly, it would be naive to think my efforts could make a significant change; however, perhaps I might be able to support a few people in their strive for a better life..
I hope that the experiences I will gain there will help me to grow as a person and let me see the world from a different perspective. I think it would help me to become a more independent person, to develop more self-confidence and to learn to be more open to new people. To be honest, sometimes I still have problems to be open to new people and show how I am feeling. I hope living abroad will help me to develop my communicative skills.
I know that the changes I may make will be only small and that I cannot help everyone. Working as a volunteer is tough job and it will bring me to the limits of myself. But I think learning where my limits are can be a good thing, because I will learn much about myself. However, at the age of 17 I do not want to give up the idea of making the world a little bit better.
As I have always been interested in history, I would like to see the problems the colonial past still causes in the countries.
The discussion about refugees in Germany, which dominates politics in Germany at the moment, and the problems many refugees have strengthen my interest. In my own village I can often hear the prejudices people have against foreigners. This has shown me how important it is to be open to people from different countries and cultures.
I hope that while I am working as a volunteer I will be able to contribute to a society, where everyone has the right chances and all people are treated the same.
